Grace Potter and the Nocturnals played an intimate show on Tuesday night, the 30th of July, at Hodi’s Half Note in Fort Collins, Colorado. One of a few quick stops for the band as they head to Rothbury, Michigan for THE festival of the year. 40,000 Music fans, art officianados, and earth conscience folks, getting together and sharing ideas and having a real good time.

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals are trying something new on their summer 2009 tour– no denim on stage. Potter and her bassist Catherine Popper, both of Local 47 (Los Angeles) and the only girls in the five-member-band, were trying on new threads on the band’s tour bus, before heading out to Enterprise, Alabama, for the BamaJam Music & Arts Festival. It’s an interesting new exploration for us,” Potter jokes over the phone. “We all have denim so we are scrambling around.”

Why she matters: It’s easy to see a pretty girl with an acoustic guitar and lump her in with all sorts of Starbucks-ready singer-songwriters. But not with Grace. Confrontational and unafraid, her sultry, sometimes bluesy pop has garnered appreciation from hard rockers and ballad-lovers alike.
You should know: Potter’s described Medicine, her forthcoming album, as ” Velvet Underground backing Aretha Franklin.”

I’ve heard this three different ways now - clearly still getting worked out live. Very much in the “songs instead of jams” vein.

The otherwise “we’re just here for the drinks” crowd further away from the stage got noticeably more and more into the show starting with Scott’s solo on “Joey”. It’s great to sit further back every now and then and just listen. The folks behind us started with the usual “her voice sounds like” comparisons and idle chit chat. Later in the show they were on their feet. Final quotes from the newbies: “Awesome, Just unbelievable, wow, incredible”. I’d like to point out that they were sober.

My five year old, attending his first rock concert, got to go back backstage, meet the band, crew and assorted parents and give Grace a sarcastic eye roll. Sweet!

“There’s something deeper to this record,” she says. “You can crawl into these songs and live in them. That’s what T Bone does. That’s what he creates. He creates imagery and gorgeous sounds. Our fans are going to hear that. There’s a more controlled, slightly more serious heartbeat.

“We’re a very light-hearted band. There’s always been a kind of sense of humor in what we do. And of course we’ll never lose that, because, you know, I’m a sassy little girl. But I do think there’s a focus, an energy, even a darkness to what he brings to the plate. So you’re going to get a little of that spooky quality on stage.”
