grace potter interviews my morning jacket for relix magazine

Grace interviewed the boys from MMJ on an off day in New York City. If you register for a free account you can read the interview online. Here’s a taste of the informative and strangely entertaining interview.

We popped “It Still Moves” into our rented RV stereo while driving south through Oregon into Northern California. With the Pacific Ocean to the right and redwood forests to the left, windows down and a crew of eight people dangerously attempting to make spaghetti in a moving vehicle. It was the closest we ever got to The Partridge Family and My Morning Jacket was our soundtrack.

Grace: He was saying the vibe of your new record was very different - that is had this gospel influence to it. Were you guys ever kind of thinking about going in that direction?
Jim: We did - it’s pure gospel - through and through.

Grace: Yeah, obviously, I mean the backing choir of robots is right off a Staple Singers recording . . .
Patrick: We have the vestments.
Jim: It’s mutated
Grace: Mutated Gospel?
Jim: I mean it’s like rock and roll. Rock and roll started out as Chuck Berry, but now rock and roll is a lot of things.
Grace: Yeah, It’s My Chemical Romance

covers, karaoke and craziness

YouTube is the source of endless GPN fun. You know your band is rising up in the ranks when the covers start to appear. While some are very good and a few are of, well, lets just say “dubious quality” - I salute them all for helping to put Grace Potter and the Nocturnals music in front of more folks. Now, on with the show!

Carly - “Nothing But The Water” - Nice!

jammy award nominees - vote!

The Jammy Award nominees were posted today by Relix. Grace and the band are nominated in the following categories:

Song of The Year - “Ah, Mary”
Tour of The Year - Gov’t Mule and Grace Potter and the Nocturnals

poll

Some odd bands are starting to show up as nominees. As much as I love Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, seeing “100 Days, 100 Nights” up for a Jammy’s award is a bit, well, unusual.

You can vote for your favorites here.

my apologies to the fruits basket

In my mind, things are going well when someone produces a mashup of your song with a wildly popular anime called “Fruits Basket”. What’s that? You wanted to watch three free episodes to wrap your mind fully around plot and character development? Here you go. Of course, if you want to play “Fruits Basket” the rules are right here.

road warriors

Last night in Pittsburgh marked the beginning of a bit of a short break for the band. A quick look back at the tour dates show that Grace, Scott, Bryan and Matt have been on the road pretty much non-stop since May 2nd of 2007 with a few weeks off for good behavior holidays. That stretch included a few amazing runs of performances that make me weary just to think about. From October 3rd, 2007 - to November 17th, 2007 the band played an incredible 36 shows in 46 days. Just a few months later they started another run on January 10th, 2008 that went until February 23rd, playing 29 shows in 45 days.

I know this site has lots of readers that rarely if ever leave comments but I think now might be the time to delurk a bit and leave a big “Thank you” to the band, crew, bookers, management and everyone else involved. They all helped put Grace Potter and the Nocturnals music and show in front of the thousands of people who appreciated it.

the nocturnals are a zero calorie sparkling beverage

You know, or not. “A Vermont based band best described as a timeless, organic brand of American Rock & Roll”.

Sooner or later, public forums and private conversations at this year’s festival end up pondering how 21st-century musicians will be paid. For nearly all of them, it won’t be royalty checks rolling in from blockbuster albums. Musicians’ livelihoods will more likely be a crazy quilt of what their lawyers would call “alternative revenue streams”: touring, downloads, ringtones, T-shirts, sponsorships, Web site ads and song placements in soundtracks or commercials.

Thoughts? Me - I say get paid baby.
