I really hate to say it, but I’m gonna say it anyway

June 11, 2010

Grace called “Goodbye Kiss” a “happy break-up song” and I’m happy to stretch that metaphor a bit further than it was intended.

This will be the last update to “This Is Somewhere” for the foreseeable future. I’ve spent the last two and a half years updating this blog almost every day and now I need to step away from it and get back to the offline world for awhile.

In the meantime I encourage you to participate over at the Grace Potter and the Nocturnals Forums to help build the rapidly growing fan community. By all accounts the new record looks to be the big push that the band we’ve all loved for years needs to get them in front of the bigger audience they richly deserve. I’m happy to have played whatever small role I did in that success.

I was privileged to be at the first live show that Grace, Scott, Matt, Benny and Cat played together as a new band. I remember speaking to Justin afterwards who asked me how everyone sounded together – I told him how amazed I was at how smooth the whole sound was – like something just clicked in place. Turns out it did.

I’ll see you on the road.

OMG.

10 snowbird June 11, 2010 at 9:21 am

Awww shucks, I hate breakups – happy or otherwise. Gonna miss getting my daily dose here! Appreciate the labor of love you’ve put in to make this blog so much more than ordinary and truly “somewhere” for all of us fan-addicts to come to for all the good stuff you are so excellent at scoping out. Wishing you well in your endeavors and hope we shall catch you down the roads that music seems to set those that come here traveling down.

11 Angela June 11, 2010 at 9:30 am

Kenny, so sorry that you’re taking a break. After all, we just sort of met. Please keep in touch. I want to thank you for everything you’ve done to help me, and for all that you’ve done to help the band. So much goes unnoticed, but not by me. Please keep in touch and I hope we can meet on the road sometime. Ang

Did something similar to this happen within the last year and a half or so? I recall being really bummed that you were taking a break, and then coming back later to find sporadic postings, and somehow that all snowballed into the media-fest you’ve graced us with lately, kc. I wish you well on your non-blog endeavors, but retain the hope you won’t give up on TIS altogether- this site is just too amazing to throw in the hat completely.

Thanks again for everything over the last few years.

13 tekawitha June 11, 2010 at 9:48 am

how about a goodbye hug? We all appreciate what you have done with your site and your insight, KC! I think you know how sincere our thanks have always been. They say that change is good but I always counter that only good change is good! I have a feeling that you will be injecting your energy in a different venue/forum but your intensity and generosity will yet remain – see you around!

14 Patrick June 11, 2010 at 9:54 am

Thanks for everything KC, it’s been good.

15 Charles June 11, 2010 at 10:03 am

Jeepers, sorry to see this. Good luck.

16 NancyNm June 11, 2010 at 10:17 am

Say it ain’t so Mojo, say it ain’t so….

17 John Furnari June 11, 2010 at 10:30 am

KC, I’m really happy for you and I’ma let you finish…but TIS is the best fan site of ALL TIME.

All meme’s aside, I’d stand at the podium and debate that with anyone, any day. Maybe you had it easy, with the band being otherworldly and and all. But in all my days I can’t recall anything that compared to this. I’m sure there have been bigger sites readership wise. And definitely ones that lasted longer. But in terms of value to fans, innovation, and entertainment…bar none.

Kudos.

18 Nate June 11, 2010 at 10:40 am

I’ve never seen someone with such badass skills at digging up the goods on the ‘net. Thanks for feeding the hungry when they needed it most.

19 toofarnorth June 11, 2010 at 11:02 am

Can not improve on what John and Nate said …
Archives, KC ???

20 Wally June 11, 2010 at 11:31 am

“I’m happy to have played whatever small role I did in that success.”
Mojo, I think you’re selling yourself a bit short my man. You were, and are, big in this overall transformation. Plus you have more access than the typical fan and whether or not you’ll admit it, I’m sure there were times you acted, behind the scenes, as our liasson in giving the band feedback on what the fans were concerned about. I appreciate all your efforts and I appreciate the fact that the band communicates with you.

I also appreciate the fact that you managed our rantings and ravings in a calm, polite, and professional manner with little or no censure. More than once, you proved to be the voice of reason.

I hope you can do what you gotta do away from here, but I also hope you will continue your web endeavors sometime, somewhere, in the future.

Just won’t be the same without cha!

21 eric June 11, 2010 at 11:59 am

john & nate said it best, u could not have done a better job…

kc thanx 4 all the time and energy u put into this…i was on the late crew and just been lurking on TIS for a couple months. i remember you told me to check it out, and i signed in to find a live chat in progress followed by a live streaming acoustic show. in the days that followed it became clear GPN had a very cool hard core fan base, and thrived on interacting with them. your help made this possible.

thus, whatever role u played in any success was not a small one. i do think it takes a lot for someone to take step back, reprioritize, and acknowledge that something they have been working so hard on for so long might not be as necassary as it once was. a lot of peeps in your shoes would be doing the exact opposite in the face of the band’s current success…and attempt to turn TIS into a greater monster and try 2 turn themselves into a bigger piece of GPN as a result. It is clear that u made this blog to help promote the band, not yourself. and in signing off now that is even more clear.

at the end of the day we can blog all we want but actions do speak louder than words. and your decision to put TIS down for a while right now is a very classy one, that speaks volumes of your character as well as the band’s success. there is def something to be said 4 going out on top, which u r def doing, in textbook style.

i do hope to meet u at a show sometime, and u can fill me in on what u r up to these days, and tell me a little of what i missed out on during the past couple years on the blog and on the stage.

lets just call this what it is. this is somewhere.

22 Saygracenow June 11, 2010 at 12:20 pm

Absolutely speechless……… You are the unofficial –official GPN web site and to see it disappear is just hard to imagine. It has been an incredible and most enjoyable journey and I wish to personally thank you for your ongoing passion, dedication and hard work. You are and will always remain “the man.” Best of luck to you buddy. The GPN world will never be the same.

23 Ike June 11, 2010 at 1:01 pm

First thanks for all the hard work, time, and effort. I’ve come to this site at least once a day for the last 2 or so years and have enjoyed all the news, links, photos, and inside information. I hope your break does you well and that maybe this site doesn’t die, but just takes a little hibernation. I hope those forums are 25% as good as this site is.

24 joester June 11, 2010 at 1:08 pm

after reading the above 22 posts, I can’t really add much more to what has been said as #23, other than a very sincere thank you!
your dedication to the band, this site and us as fans has been remarkable.
friendships have been formed as a result of the one thing we all seem to share:
a love for live music that touches the soul.
GPN gives us that – and you provided a site to see and hear parts of the GPN world that we would never have seen or heard otherwise.
thanks –
namaste

25 Dayna June 11, 2010 at 2:07 pm

<3 still speechless. Thank you for everything, KC!!

26 Danado June 11, 2010 at 2:16 pm

I am gonna miss this site. Thank you so much for updating us and entertaining us for all these years. LYLYS!!! And enjoy your free time.

27 Karen June 11, 2010 at 2:26 pm

Déjà vu, except that déjà vu is an illusion and these partings have been all too real.

I always resented that David Copperfield got to take long walks by the sea when he was bereaved, while in reality we have to soldier on with every sad thing that happens (there was a male vs female bias to my resentment, too, but that’s not relevant here). Good thing this happened today instead of tomorrow when I will be gone camping for a week. Now instead of coming back to a shock, I can take long, sad, David Copperfieldish walks and hopefully come to grips with it by then.

I’m so happy for kc that this was apparently all he wanted it to be. (Except perhaps for participants. I blame Twitter in part for that.) And I appreciate John Furnari’s affirmation of what was made here – he is in the best position to know how good it was.

GPN will be out there in the spotlight, easy to find. I hope those of us who don’t have any personal claim on kc see him again somewhere soon, and that he wants to be recognized.

28 owllover June 11, 2010 at 2:36 pm

Doug..thanks for the memories. I hope we will finally one day get to enjoy a show together. until then, NOC ON!

29 Vtshome June 11, 2010 at 3:27 pm

TY : )

30 Dayna June 11, 2010 at 4:03 pm

In other news, who gave Matty a guitar?!?! And why was I so amused by that? I just kept thinking of the picture with the caption, “Houston, we’ve got a prombel.”

31 K&J June 11, 2010 at 5:05 pm

Dear KC–
You will truly be missed-(sad day for all). We sincerely thank you for all your hard work and excellent reporting (which I am sure that took a monumental amount of your time)) It kept us all up to date of the daily GPN goings on and FOR THAT We SINCERELY thank you!! YOU DID ONE PHENOMINAL JOB!!.
My husband and I HAD THE PLEASURE OF MEETING YOU AND WATCHING THE SHOW UPSTAIRS at LEVON’S Ramble, AND I HOPE WE MEET AGAIN SOON!!!!!.–Best of luck in your future endeavors .

32 Bill June 11, 2010 at 5:24 pm

Turn this site over to someone who can keep it going. It makes absolutely no sense to shut it down. No sense.

33 michael June 11, 2010 at 6:28 pm

Thank You So Much! It has been a pleasure to read this blog for more than 2 years, and to participate a time or two. There is no way to put into words how much I will miss it. Best of luck in all that you do. Thanks again.

Turn this site over to someone who can keep it going. It makes absolutely no sense to shut it down. No sense.

Bill, as much as I hate to see TIS go dark, I cannot imagine anyone else continuing what has been created here. Simply put . . from what I’ve seen in my cyber wandering . .
KCortez is one of a kind in the world of music bloggers.

I’m going to point you to John Furnari’s post # 17 up-thread as backup for my opinion . . and ask that you read this prior thread . . http://www.thisissomewhere.com/2010/05/19/four-years-ago-today-as-told-by-the-folks-at-bigmethod/

35 NolaMar June 11, 2010 at 8:42 pm

Oh my! I was totally caught off-guard by this. Best of luck to you and thanks for all the info & updates on GPN!

36 toofarnorth June 11, 2010 at 8:52 pm

KC, I’ve been trying all day to come up with something to say in this thread besides my short #19 comment. I will miss this place so much yet the words to express that continue to fail me. Maybe because as Karen noted – déjà vu – it has all been said before.
Thank You seems totally inadequate . . maybe a Danke Schoen or Thanks for The Memories video link ? . . No ? . . didn’t think so . . ;)

Hope we see you enjoying being a plain ole fan on http://www.gracepotter.com/forums/ often.

37 PQ June 11, 2010 at 8:52 pm

Thanks for everything. Even though I dont post much, I still look at TIS a couple times a day. It will be sorely missed, but it will not leave my favorites anytime soon. Hopefully ur hiatus is short!

38 wbill June 11, 2010 at 10:33 pm

All I can say is thanxs. First thing when computer is on, was check this site. Can not express to how much it will be missed. You did a great job. Peace brother.

39 Trish June 12, 2010 at 12:25 am

Can’t thank you enough for this incredible experience. I will miss this site and all the wonderful dialogue with such a great group of fans, but am happy to know that you are taking good care of yourself and getting the break you deserve. Wishing you all the best. :)

40 JT/NY June 12, 2010 at 9:13 am

41 Smackie June 12, 2010 at 10:41 am

Thank you and TIS will be missed.

42 guava6982 June 12, 2010 at 3:20 pm

Sad news…thanks so much for all that you have done and all of you hard work and dedication. You are one of a kind and your contribution will not be forgotten.

43 BIGJim223 June 12, 2010 at 5:01 pm

Don’t know what to say! Seems I have been reading TIS since the beginning, though I never posted a whole lot, I read your words every day. You did a great job and hope to catch you in person sometime. Your posts will be missed, for sure!
BIGJim223

44 Bill June 12, 2010 at 7:25 pm

Yeah, I suppose keeping this blog running with the same amount of steam as the previous couple of years would be a tall task. Still seems odd that it’s going dark when they’re getting ready to explode. Maybe it’s the perfect time, who knows.

45 Kired June 12, 2010 at 9:20 pm

Never seen before, never to be seen again. It was a hell of a run, and we will all be able to say, “I was there when….”

46 Timothy June 13, 2010 at 8:05 am

A big thanks from Germany, too. The #1 source for everything GPN is gone…

47 toofarnorth June 13, 2010 at 11:30 am

Auto-pilot click on (now)#2 in Firefox ‘most visited’ drop down … ;)

48 Jessica June 13, 2010 at 7:28 pm

Well leave it to the cryer to come through in true cryer fashion. While I have wondered every morning when I open my computer to get my first of usually several daily doses of TIS where you find the time to keep up with everything, I never imagined we’d one day not have you here. Without your site I never would have met my GPN Posse family, and I hope you know how greatful I am. This band’s music means more to me than words can even explain, and the way you have set this up has made us all feel like we are a part of something incredible. I’m so glad I got to meet you in Lebanon. While I know you won’t accept it, you deserve so much recognition for what you’ve done for the band and for all of us. Thanks KC, you are the man and I know I’ll see you on the road.

49 eric June 14, 2010 at 8:45 am

i dont know, KC. i meant everything i said but i am starting to have second thoughts of letting u off the hook so easy on all this. starting to feel a little like michelle phifer in Grease 2 “just when i found u i lost u” (that was 4 u grace). maybe if we each send u like 32 cents a day or something…?

in all seriousness i think this site promoted GPN a lot more than u or the band ever realized. it is different than the forums on the GPN web site and well worthy of the long haul if u smell what im steppin in. it is the only “fan site” i know of for GPN. maybe take the summer off and then reconsider updating TIS like once a week or so, or just do live chats when appropriate, or be more active during tours, or some crazy formula… if any of that is even a remotely feasible possibility, i have no idea. either way, thanks again!

in other news the webster hall show was sweet and im already very curious where they are playing for new years eve, hopefully THIS show IS SOMEWHERE in the northeast

50 k. cortez June 14, 2010 at 8:58 am

Eric,

There are two different issues here:
1) What’s good for me
2) What’s good for the band

Yes, I smell what you’re stepping in. It’s not like I “accidentally” created something that did a good job promoting the band. That said, the most important “scarce resource” at this moment is my time.
