here comes a regular : john doe
Could you encompass my 80’s music experience any more neatly? Doubt it. Here Come A Regular. I was having a conversation with a guitar player I know about early 80’s rock. I spoke about X and The Replacements and that musical connection of a live show and, well, here you go.

garotas suecas - "codinome dinamite"
via Carrie Brownstein “The band is called Garotas Suecas, and I urge you to remember the name. Within two songs, I went from sitting at a table nodding my head to the front row — only about eight Brooklynites were willing to dance — at which point I became that person standing in front of the lead singer basically losing my mind. I am 34 years old. It has literally been a decade since I went up to a stage, closed my eyes, danced like a fool and never wanted the moment to end. All I kept thinking was that I wished everyone I knew could witness this show.”

alex chilton is gone
Ann Powers at the LA Times blog
I have a tattered souvenir from a Big Star store in Memphis, picked up on a pilgrimage to the South that I made when I was barely 21, when I set forth to find some mineral traces of the blues and early rock heritage I’d only read about in books. What I found on that journey was Alex Chilton. I’d already come to love Big Star’s catalog, introduced to me via the mix tapes my friends and I made for each other as we built our own twisted history of Americana from what the band X once called “the unheard music.” Alex Chilton was a wandering, heretical patriarch of our new religion. Bands like the Replacements and R.E.M. found him inspirational. (Members of one such group, the Posies, would later play with a reformed Big Star.) College radio DJs turned Big Star’s catchy but unkempt songs into the hits they should have been the first time around. The band had been active in the 1970s, but they belonged to us, the kids fighting off the shadow of the Baby Boomers who’d been too dumb to realize how great it was. More...local natives : airplanes
You can stream the entire album at the band’s homepage.
the bangles : hero takes a fall
First chick band that I thought was great. Listen to those harmonies and that lead guitar sound. Before they “sold out” (which they themselves admit) they had a great thing going. In 1985 I hung out pre and post show with them in a bar in Virginia Beach – still a night to remember. Susanna is still doing it with Matthew Sweet – Rain, Different Drum, Cinnamon Girl, You’re So Vain, Maggie May – check out “Under The Covers”.
zooey for the win

I’m not crazy about them being labeled a “jam band.” I see them as nothing more than a kick ass rock n roll band.
Would you prefer jelly?
The band has hit the big time. Proof:

Rolling Stone (d) named them one of “Ten Blues Bands to Watch” 3 years ago. They’ll get it right sooner or later.
Wookie, you have to be a certain age to realize there is a real inappropriate Timex joke in there someplace…
Thanks for the scan guys . . the RS issue may show up in this area by sometime next week
Okayyyy . . the watch just made me LOL.
Is it just me, or does the jam band label and the write up seem to be making a point of separating GPN from their Miley/JBro label-mates for the readers of RS ?
TH1 – I am of that certain age but I don’t get the inappropriate part – I do love puns but don’t feel that one is here – I am a bit ticked off about this!
Timex takes a lickin and keeps on tickin?
tekawitha . . I’m assuming you’re ticked about the RS write up not TH1’s joke ? I’m concerned about who/where I can share it . . so probably won’t this time.
Wookie/ TH1 . . is it a Timex ? . . just thought the whole ebay jump-on-the-wagon thing was funny by itself, but will agree it indicates expected popularity.
toofar – I was only being punny – tick-tock – I wanted to take the time to joke around. Hope I didn’t second guess you? BTW – so good to see you at the MassMoCA show1
Tek be a Punmiester! Or is it Punmiestress?….
….And know we know wookie is “of a certain age” !
Was happy to see you too . . wish could make it to more shows . . maybe this year.
No second guessing – I just really shouldn’t play when trying to work – am in a whole nutha mind set
Bill, The jamband label has done well for GPN and is a major reason they are being recognized to date. No they are not now or ever been a Jam band. But they have been hard working road warriors like most Jam bands. BTW remember when Twang magazine called TIS a country CD?
Scantastic! Ain’t no time to go into RS’ oppinion … (it’s like Iggy Pop:) … But they can call them late for dinner as long as they like it and help sell CD’s! And now if you will turn to page 236 in your Hymnals ….
It’s about time Rolling Stone recognized GPN! Last issue they had upcoming albums & no GPN. Let’s enjoy our little secret for a little while longer because it’s about to end!!!!!!
about the jam band thingy –
GPN has played on JamCruise, toured with Gov’t Mule, played a number of festivals alongside lots of other jam bands, sat in and played in the middle of Moe’s set –
so they get along well with the jam band culture and crowds;
but no, they’re not a jam band.
not really.
sort of similar to jam bands during some of their jams, but not a jam band.
they also toured with Brett Dennon – but they are a FAR away from being pop music.
how about we avoid labels, and just call them a damn fine band!
joester- you took the words right out of my mouth. I do like that “similar to Tina/Janis with the Sticky Fingers era Stones” description I’ve seen. It’s how I describe GPN to my friends. They would fit right in with the classic 70’s rock acts.
It’s still rock n roll to me.
its rock n roll but its also definatly Jam…….. hey its Rolling Stone!! pretty awesome if you ask me!
Makes no difference what they call them…this is POSITIVE NATIONAL PUBLICITY!!!! This is what they need and I hope they get alot more in the future!!! Our little secret is no longer a secret…….
Nice candid pics of the band from the video shoot on rollingstone.com Plus, most of the reader feedback for the article is GPN based…..all positive!! A number of responses basically tell RS that GPN has been around, they just never noticed, they been wasting their ink on Lady Gagas etc…..kinda comical!!
