one that didn’t make it

February 24, 2010

In light of the recent track listing for the new record I wanted to talk about a song that didn’t make the cut. “Can’t See Through To The Other Side” is a beautiful, haunting ballad. The version below is from the Allen Room performance of February 2008

Stylistically, this song is quite similar to “Things I Never Needed” so it’s clear that both tunes could not end up on the record. The song did appear on Live From Skowhegan which perhaps rules it out for inclusion here.

That said . . . . Sugar!

One last thing that I neglect to point out enough. Thank you GPN for the free taping policy. Let the fans be fans and hopefully they’ll continue to support you.

Another good one. As long as they come back to the set rotation I’ll be happy!

absolutely love that tapers have access at shows and can share on Archive . . those sets are definitely a big part of what keeps my interest level in GPN very high . . suspect that’s true for a lot of us who can’t get to live shows very often
being able to let people hear how great GPN is live is a good recruiting tool too

I’m glad you’re giving some love to ” Can’t See Through ” , KC . . heard it at my first GPN show in Portsmouth 2yrs ago this month . . was blown away by the band as I’d been told I would be . . but it was CST that replayed in my head for days and has remained a big favorite

First time I heard ” Things I Never Needed ” it reminded me , and others , of CST . . sort of figured then that CST was not going to make the album and am a little sad about that

tapers –
thanks to the band for allowing recording (funny how we still call it “taping”) and understanding how it’s beneficial to the band and it’s fans.
without Archive.org, and frequent trading of CD’s amongst fans – a lot of us would still have not heard the band in it’s “new”/current lineup with Cat and Benny.
I’ll say this again – before a show, or during a break – go visit a taper and thank them, and ask if he/she needs a break while you watch their gear, or if you can buy them a drink – these folks have invested much time and money to bring their gear to a show. It takes time to get the right mix of hardware/software and live recording experince to get an audience recording produced in a high enough quality to be fun to listen to.
One more suggestion – if you’re fan who likes to sing along to every word – or maybe you want to converse with your friends during a show – do it away from that mic stand please. it really sucks to have nailed all your settings, and picked the right combo of mics and settings, only to hear a conversation overpowering the music, or someone singing louder than Grace.
thanks GPN and management for seeing how a fan base can be enriched by allowing recording of shows. live show recordings do not slow sales of studio releases, it widens the exposure to even more fans.
2 months minus one day til we see GPN again….. :)

That Allen Room show was exquisite. Can’t wait for the new cd. Thanks for providing great resources to the fans and updating us, Cortez (which is one of my favorite Neil Young songs). Tapers rule and bands that allow taping and digital sharing of their live music rules too. :-) Angela

I’m pumped for the new album. I was hoping “Losing Myself” would make the cut. I heard it for the first time in Burlington during one of the band’s four New Year’s shows. It’s just a really lovely song. GPN seems to be rocketing to a new level of popularity and recognizibilty, and the song really seems to be about that feeling of losing a bit of yourself in the process. I think this album is shaping up to be a real reflection of what the band is now, and the feeling that part of your soul is out there for anyone and everyone to grab a piece of really fits that tone. Well, I’ll be sure to buy the album when it’s realeased and hope to catch “Losing Myself” live this summer :)
