mark batson to produce new record for grace potter and the nocturnals

Grace Potter and the Nocturnals will release a new studio album this spring. The album, a collaboration with songwriter/producer Mark Batson, is the first to feature the Nocturnals current lineup. It is unclear what happened to an earlier series of recording sessions the band did with producer T-Bone Burnett. Baton is best known in the hip-hip/R&B world for his work with Dr. Dre, Jay-Z, Alicia Keys. He branched out in 2005 to work with Dave Matthews Band on Stand Up.

The band entered Los Angeles’ Westlake Studios with Batson in early September. The group recorded a dozen tracks in 17 weeks, brining her new song total to 17. The group is currently mixing the album and deciding which songs to include, though the Obama-inspired “Colors,” the new “Oasis,” “Tiny Light” and the first Batson/Potter collaboration “Medicine” will all make the cut.

That clears it all up doesn’t it?

I guess that finally answers all our questions. That T-Bone guy just wasn’t good enough for this GPN group so they needed to move on. (And all this time I was blaming it on Animal.)

Maybe Grace finally realized all the comments made by the fanbase that the T-Bone album wasn’t a Nocturnals album hit home. Maybe she feels so comfortable with the new lineup that she wanted all of them on the record. I guess for now we’ll just have to guess but I’m really happy it’s truly in name & performance going to be a Grace Potter & The Nocturnals record!!!

Completely uniformed, subjective opinion: I never liked the fact that T Bone required recording w/his peeps. Also, that weird interview comment about how he was napping during a recording session always bothered me. I’m crazy like that. I expect people to be awake while they’re working. I also expect them to come up with better creative feedback than “do it again, but more like the Pink Panther.” WTF?

Onward and upward! Timing’s cool too, release on the cusp of festie season, et al. Rock on!

whatever keeps the band happy, touring and jammin :)

So, ummm, does this mean TWO sets of recoupable production costs? That would be the BAD news for them. The GOOD news for us? They’ll be playing non-stop!

as we were posting – patience!

” The GOOD news for us? They’ll be playing non-stop! ”

I just realized I have a pretty wide selfish streak . . . . :D

Agree with Steph on the timing . . her reason plus this.
Someone who tracks new releases said it is going to be a very crowded field this holiday season making it extra tough for those who don’t have mega-bucks to spend on promotion.

This is not good. Mark Batson is not a good producer…at all. This just soured my morning.

Well being a huge DMB fan I know how Mark Batson worked with them. As Dave said the record should have been entitled DMB feat. Mark Batson. Maybe that’s what this will be for GPN, but maybe it’s what they need. T-Bone could have been a bad thing…we’ll see.

Any bets on whether the T-Bone recordings end up as a solo grace release?

14 toofarnorth November 14, 2009 at 7:04 pm

Maybe this is naive but . . considering Dave Matthews is a pretty big fish in the music world pond . .
if Mark Batson was allowed to take that much control of the DMB album — Why ?
and if DM et al weren’t happy with the results why did they agree to release it ?
Was it only after fans complained that Batson’s influence became an issue ?

It’s nice to finally know just what in the fuck is/was going on with that record. It was driving me nuts.
