Major disappointment on the set list. WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON HERE?

2 Scotty October 23, 2009 at 9:32 am

Umm, were you there? It was fucking sick!

Jeff Tweedy (Wilco) sometimes talks to fans from the stage about things that bother him. I recently downloaded a show during which he addresses comments by online fans about Wilco’s set lists.

Short version . . most people at one show don’t know what has or hasn’t been played at other shows.

We’re looking for new music to be released . . but I think JT made a good point so have to wonder how many people in last night’s crowd even knew the possibility existed . . betting vast majority were like Scotty . . very happy with the show they got.

expectations can lead to disappointments

There’s certainly a disconnect between expectations of long time fans (many of whom read this blog) and newcomers to GPN. I would assume that the majority of folks at shows these days, since numbers appear to be growing, are new to the band so setlists that might look a bit long in the tooth to us are still mostly brand new to others.

Tough balancing act.

Please don’t misunderstand folks. At times I’m disappointed with my own kids but still love them to death. If I was at the show last night I would have been front row and loving every minute of it. My disappointment is in the fact that the new tunes we “expected” to hear this time around were not performed. I’m sure there are a million reasons why not but for me I just can’t wait to hear what I know in my heart is going to be spectacular.

Probably can’t say this right, but it seems these songs are the “essential” GPN at the moment, and newbies need to know them in order to develop the same kind of love for the band that we have. For the rest of us, don’t they sound different with Kat and Benny? I’d like to find out firsthand.

I’ve heard close to this same setlist played live 7 times this summer. I honestly have to say that I’ve danced up front and even back of the house at Infinity Hall and enjoyed it every time, and the band does bring it every time. They do play every show like it’s there last, even if the set list is extremely similar to the last played. If I were in Richmond last night would I have been disappointed in hearing the same show for the 8th time. Well, short answer NO. Would I have preferred to hear more a mix of old and new and rarely played? Hell yeah. Hopefully as the tour gets going more variety will be added in?? Well, I don’t know, but we in the peanut gallery can surely hope.

I’ve only seen GPN once before and I’m going with Scotty’s comment!

well…honestly, what I’ve heard they sounded great, definately look like they are enjoying themselves. On the other hand, this is the start of their NEW tour and they are playing the same set they have for ages. I don’t think that is necessary just for the new fans..or the new lineup. for a long time fan, I’d think they’d consider old timers and newbies. Maybe they could pull out some old ones we haven’t heard in ages, like MYSTERY TRAIN. I’d pay just to hear that one song!! I feel ya Micheal, the love is there, but sometimes we are left wondering what exactly is going on. I know my friend Wally from Wanee had a great time and brought along his wife who is a NEW fan! :)

They do sound great . . can listen to/download the show here

(sorry for the double thread posting KC but think the link belongs here too )

Welcome adehil . . glad you loved the show & nice to see you here.
( btw – thank you for the video in the other thread)

I do get what the longtime fans are saying – I really do – but realistically how many people are fortunate enough to see multiple shows

12 owllover October 24, 2009 at 1:22 pm

as the tour comes nowhere near my hometown, not only am I not seeing multiple shows, I won’t be seeing any shows. :(

I personally am not going to download this show which contains songs I have downloaded many times before with this exact set list. Money is tight, if your fans are buying tickets (7 times to see the NOCS !!) you need to bring it, keep it interesting, keep it current, mix it up and leave everyone ..new fans and old…wanting and wondering what comes next!! And for diehard fans who have been so excited for this new tour to begin, you have to understand where we are coming from.

At least from the video if the band is tired of playing these same songs they sure don’t show it. :)

It seems the band song choices as of late are leaning towards the bluesy/soul vibe rather than the rock and roll vibe. That said, I’m wondering why “Treat Me Right” doesn’t make an appearance.

14 snowbird October 25, 2009 at 8:27 am

Me too. It’s a favorite and full of that bluesy/soulful sound, did a quit run through the archive set lists and it looks like it hasn’t made an appearance since New Years Eve ( : – (

15 snowbird October 25, 2009 at 8:29 am

make that a quick run – KC – we need an edit button for people like me that hit send too quickly without proof reading!! ; – }

I’ve seen a lot of these songs a zillion times, but I would be tickled pink if the next show I make it to has White Rabbit (Grace is right next to Corin Tucker of Sleater-Kinney as to who can properly do Grace Slick justice), Come Into My Kitchen, and Medicine. Those 3 are still comparatively new and JAAAAMMM.

17 Todd October 26, 2009 at 1:13 pm

And it looks like they broke out a couple last night!

“Later, the band played two new numbers. “Things I Never Needed” was a slow, soulful tune. She didn’t announce the name of the second one, a swampy groove that devolved into psychedelic guitar work. The latter was a good companion piece to the band’s only cover, Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit.”

Of course a quick trip to the TIS sidebar shows that WR is far from their only cover … Guess he meant only cover last night

18 owllover October 26, 2009 at 4:58 pm

Mojo…Treat me Right…oh oh ohhh, has to me one of my all time faves! and if the direction is heading towards bluesy soul vibe….BRING! IT!! ON!!!!
