Did a little hunting for info – discovered it was invented in 1919 as an attempt to make an improved radio and has a really interesting musical history. Also stumbled over this and given the “Thermin Blues” appearance in the set it’s just too fun to not share it http://www.thereminworld.com/news.asp?s=764

btw: it’s very easy to fall in love with Asheville and there is something special about the Orange Peel, ragged though it may be
