here comes a regular : john doe
Could you encompass my 80’s music experience any more neatly? Doubt it. Here Come A Regular. I was having a conversation with a guitar player I know about early 80’s rock. I spoke about X and The Replacements and that musical connection of a live show and, well, here you go.

garotas suecas - "codinome dinamite"
via Carrie Brownstein “The band is called Garotas Suecas, and I urge you to remember the name. Within two songs, I went from sitting at a table nodding my head to the front row — only about eight Brooklynites were willing to dance — at which point I became that person standing in front of the lead singer basically losing my mind. I am 34 years old. It has literally been a decade since I went up to a stage, closed my eyes, danced like a fool and never wanted the moment to end. All I kept thinking was that I wished everyone I knew could witness this show.”

alex chilton is gone
Ann Powers at the LA Times blog
I have a tattered souvenir from a Big Star store in Memphis, picked up on a pilgrimage to the South that I made when I was barely 21, when I set forth to find some mineral traces of the blues and early rock heritage I’d only read about in books. What I found on that journey was Alex Chilton. I’d already come to love Big Star’s catalog, introduced to me via the mix tapes my friends and I made for each other as we built our own twisted history of Americana from what the band X once called “the unheard music.” Alex Chilton was a wandering, heretical patriarch of our new religion. Bands like the Replacements and R.E.M. found him inspirational. (Members of one such group, the Posies, would later play with a reformed Big Star.) College radio DJs turned Big Star’s catchy but unkempt songs into the hits they should have been the first time around. The band had been active in the 1970s, but they belonged to us, the kids fighting off the shadow of the Baby Boomers who’d been too dumb to realize how great it was. More...local natives : airplanes

the bangles : hero takes a fall
First chick band that I thought was great. Listen to those harmonies and that lead guitar sound. Before they “sold out” (which they themselves admit) they had a great thing going. In 1985 I hung out pre and post show with them in a bar in Virginia Beach – still a night to remember. Susanna is still doing it with Matthew Sweet – Rain, Different Drum, Cinnamon Girl, You’re So Vain, Maggie May – check out “Under The Covers”.

Good to know ’cause I was totally wondering if you’d like gone valley on us, omgawd!
Grace seems very natural playing “Grace” – comfortable – sign of more acting to come maybe ? Seem to remember an interview where she mentioned she would like to do a cameo role in a movie (?).
I have serious cognitive dissonance from watching Grace telling that wannabe, she can’t wait for her next album. Ack!
Reminds me of this story. When Disney first decided to build MGM Studios on their property in Florida their concept was simple – “build a realistic in all details working backlot to show the tourists.” Problematically, that’s just what happened. Disney did such a good job building a “fake” backlot that quite a few productions wanted to use it as a “real” one. Now, rather than “fake actors and production folks” hanging out making “fake movies” they were faced with the very real problem of having “real actors and production folks” hanging out making “real movies”. Can’t show the tourists that right? So they had to build another, less realistic backlot and go back to their original plan of hiring “real actors and production folks” to portray “real actors and production folks” in a totally “fake” environment.
To further stretch credibility, I’m not sure this story is true. Perhaps it’s simple a modern parable for the dissonance that Kired is experiencing.
Hi! I bought, “This is Somewhere” after I heard this gorgeous duet. And I love it! I have been a fan of Joy for so long now, and I am so glad that she and Joy did this song. Joy has a very soothing and harmonic voice, while Grace’s is more edgy, and it results in this gorgeous piece of music.
I stopped watching OTH long time ago, but I am definitely going to watch the scenes between Grace and Joy/Haley.
PS. I love Joy’s outfit, too.
after Medine’s post…I rest my case! OTH might not be the cup of tea for most Nocaholics, but it will bring them to the light.
but have to agree, the “saving a slot in my CD case” line….I threw up in my mouth a little.
Honestly? It is a horrible show, if you ask me. But it may be a good move for Grace and the Nocturnals. I may not watch the show anymore, but after having bought the duet between Grace and Joy, I found myself wanting to get “This is Somewhere”. This is obviously not a Nocturnals song, but I like it.
And I am a Joy fan, so it is safe to say, that this isn’t a Joy song either. Her music tends to be a little more calm and as she has said herself, her lyrics tend to be a little dramatic, so I would rather have wanted Grace and Joy to do a duet with their own styles, but this is solely for the show, I think.
The songs Joy have performed on the show as Haley tend to be more pop-like, and this duet does, too.
Oh and I don’t know if any of you noticed, but a friend of mine did and apparently the song was on ranked #96 on the Rock list at iTunes. And this is good considering the fact that it has yet to be promoted. I am sure it will reach higher after the episode has aired. Joy’s, “Feel This” was in the top 10, both in the US and various European countries last season, if I am correct.
I’m thinking I’m glad I won’t be able to catch the show – gotta agree with Kired, hard to watch that dialogue, feel like I slipped into another dimension.
But, that’s only because I know who the singer is in the show and I haven’t a clue about the actress (even if she might be a singer too – and it’s Joy I’m speaking of here)
I’m a realist too, and Medine thanks for coming on board and telling us you bought a Noc’s CD because of hearing of the duets – I’m just going hope that many more will do the same in the next week or too, just like you.
No problem.
I heard “Apologies” earlier this year, but I never really got the chance to listen the album. And I definitely like it! But I had to order it, seeing that Grace isn’t known here in Denmark, but I have heard she is really good live, so I would definitely like to see her stop by here soon, heh!
I can definitely see why it may be a little odd for Grace fans to suddenly see her portray somebody else, but the dialogue usually sucks on OTH, so that is nothing new.
Joy is not all that known. She recorded a record with Epic Records a few years ago, but she was dropped, because they changed management and her style wasn’t what they were looking for or something along that – and the album hasn’t been released, though three songs were released on her Epic site. She also have three songs on the, “Ten Inch Hero” soundtrack which won an indie award for being the best soundtrack. And she has done two EP discs, one during her time on a daytime show, and one when she was touring the country with the, The Wreckers and Tyler Hilton on the oth music tour.
And there is an error in that scene, because if I am correct, Haley never released an album (she performed a song with Tyler Hilton, the duet, “When the Stars Go Blue” which reached No. 89 the Pop 100 chart), so the viewers probably have no clue which album Grace is referring to.
I really hope they will put the song up on cdbaby.com, because it Joy’s, “Feel This” debuted #1 on the CD Baby Top Seller list!
I truly think this could be good for both Grace and Joy. Or I hope!
***which reached No. 89 the Billboard Pop 100 chart.
Medine -to say that the Noc’s are really good live is the understatement of the century. At least in my mind! They are all at their best performing to a crowd – they relate to the audience and the energy is incredible – not just Grace but Scott on lead guitars, Mad Man Matt on the drums and Bryan on the bass. They are a very cohesive unit and I hope you can see them live – they were in Lugano just a few months ago, and maybe they’ll return to Europe soon, I’m betting they’d like to.
I will say that though I don’t know Joy’s work – her voice really does blend well with Grace’s on the song they’ve done here, in the clip I’ve hear.
Thanks again for your comments – from Denmark no less! Cool!
I have only heard good things about the band, so I can definitely imagine them being incredible performers! Grace has a strong voice, so I can imagine her reaching out to the audience easily. Denmark is such a little country, but there are so many bands I would love to see perform here, the Nocturnals are high up on that list! I love this band, I don’t know if you’ve heard of them, Beach House. I don’t know anybody who knows them, but I got an e-mail awhile ago that said that they would visit Denmark, so I have hope for the Nocturnals.
I definitely agree, their voices meshed so well. They have different voices, but the result of their different voices blending, made the song so much more harmonic.
Aww, no need to thank me, heh!
Denmark is a very beautiful little country Medine. I brought my bicycle over there a number of years ago now, but have great memories. I based myself in Kubenhavn and loved touring the area, meeting the people and enjoying the food and beer too!
Denmark rocks, and so does Medine!!
