little honey : lucinda williams

Today brings another in our line of “Influences” postings. GPN used to pull out a “Joey->Joy->Joey” transition from time to time. For those of you who don’t know “Joy” is a Lucinda Williams song released a few years back.

lucinda honey beeLucinda, one of Grace’s oft-mentioned musical heroes, released a new record called “Honey Bee” on Tuesday. To say I like this is, well, it’s an understatement. I was just thinking back to the fact that I’ve been aware of her music for over 16 years from the rural country/bluegrass of “Happy Woman Blues” to her funky bluesy resurgence on “Sweet Old World” to the masterpiece of “Car Wheels On A Gravel Road“. Damn, I’m reminded of how wickedly talented she is. And now, she has decided to bring the nasty! On songs that should resonate deeply with GPN fans we get the boozy rambler of “Jailhouse Tears” with Elvis Costello alongside a cover of the AC/DC cover “It’s A Long Way To The Top”. Mixed in is a melange of plaintive soft songs along with Telecaster fueled rockers. Listen to “Real Love” from Letterman, which lines up nicely with GPN’s more pop based rockers like “Meantime” and “Ah, Mary” and “Honey Bee” – which simply makes me think of “If I Was From Paris”. Next cover?

Just before you posted this here, kc, I was picturing Grace singing both “Real Love” and “Honey Bee,” and wondering if there was any protocol for how long a song had to be out before it was covered. Love both songs and would like to hear Grace’s take on them.
