In the music business, back in the Golden Era, there existed a working business model: Release a record and tour incessantly to promote it; get on festival bills; get opening slots on big tours; pick up gigs on days off, anything it takes.

Just work your ass off and promote the music you love enough to put on wax. This old model is making a comeback in today’s broken music industry.

Last December, I took my wife to Asheville to the 20 th annual Warren Haynes Xmas Jam. I was going to see Jackson Browne and Peter Frampton and really could care less who else was on the bill… little did I know. The first band to hit the stage was Grace Potter & the Nocturnals.

From the first song I was hooked. Young, eager and honestly thrilled to be playing, the four-piece band fronted by 24-year-old vocalist/guitarist/organist Grace Potter worked the old model on me. I was on iTunes the next day, buying their latest release,

I mean, this is it right? Click to read the rest of the story.

Very cool comments by the writer and a solid interview.
Always like to read Grace’s thoughts on writing and about the influences on GPN’s music - especially appreciated the reference this time.
If anyone else had trouble getting to page 43 try this . . . . .

btw - this December is the 20th anniversary of Warren Haynes Christmas Jam in Asheville - first benefit show was done in 1988

“People listen to music to escape, or to augment and bring more meaning to their lives, . . .”
Grace is right on track with that comment, and with her lyrics. Nice interview.

Thanks for the link to the second page, toofar, there was lots of good stuff there. I appreciated Grace’s comments on writing with guitar versus piano. Saw an interview with Elton John awhile back where he said writing on the piano allows for more complexity in a song because of the additional chord choices. (too lazy to search out the interview, but that was the gist of it.)

Btw (and please don’t hate me Th1), agreeing with toofar on the anniversary thing. 1988 is the wedding, 1989 is the first anniversary, 2008 is the twentieth anniversary (but is the twenty-first show).

Potaytoes / potahtoes - both are right.
I’m just going by Mr. Haynes reckoning and according to what little has been said by him they are going to put on one heck of a 20th anniversary show this year with the usual Pre-jam night but two nights of the Christmas Jam itself.
The tickets and info usually go up the week after Halloween so will see then I guess. Have an enabler kind of friend who wants to go - haven’t dared look at airfare yet . . . .

Bet 2009 he calls it the 22nd Annual ??
