she’ll be the end of me and maybe everyone

by k. cortez on October 14, 2008

Amidst the GPN fan concern(?) about Grace’s appearance on One Tree Hill it seems to me that one very interesting factor is overlooked. October 20th, weeks before a major US election, a highly watched teen drama will feature one of the most subtly subversive political songs to come around in years. I refer, of course, to “Ah, Mary”. While we don’t know how this will play out on screen (we had hoped for the straight laced republican kids to storm the stage in protest of the lyrics) we can certainly say – Rock the vote baby!

“Ah, Mary” – October 11, 2008 at The Recher Theatre in Towson, MD.

AH MARY
Lyrics by Grace Potter
Music by Potter / Tournet / Dondero / Burr

She’s skilled at the art of deception and she knows it
She’s got dirty money that she plays with all the time
She waters the garden but maybe she just likes the hoses
She puts herself just a notch above humankind

Ah Mary
She’ll make you cookies
Then she’ll burn your town
Ah Mary
Ashes ashes but she won’t fall down
She’s the beat of my heart
She’s the shot of a gun
She’ll be the end of me
And maybe everyone

Call her a bully she’ll blow up your whole damn playground
Pour her a drink and watch it go straight to her head
She’ll take you so high up and cover her eyes as you fall down
Then in the morning don’t be surprised if you’re dead

Ah Mary
She’ll bake you cookies
Then she’ll burn your town
Ah Mary
Ashes ashes but she won’t fall down

She’s the beat of my heart
She’s the shot of a gun
She’ll be the end of me
And maybe everyone

Ah Mary, Mary Mary, Mary-ca

I want to be very excited by this idea, but will the majority of people who watch this kind of show get the subtle message?

“a highly watched teen drama ” Almost forgot to mention that this is one understated quote. The numbers watching are huge!

3 Million+ Viewers – of course, one can only hope that exposure translates to sales/concert attendance.

The evidence is still very mixed on that front.

New Posse job, “Excuse sir/mam, where did you first learn of Grace Potter?”

Since the show seems to respect music as a means of communicating thoughts and feelings, their audience is hopefully tuned in to thinking about lyrics and at least some will get it.
Overheard at a meeting this morning – ” young people are such idealists” – said as if that’s a bad thing. WTF ? the problem is more that idealism too often erodes into complacency, imho.
As have said elsewhere – I am proud to be a fan of a young artist that has the courage of their convictions in what has been a go-along-to-get-along society for far too long.

Sorry for the political muttering – just been that kind of day . . . . . . . . .
On the business side – - – it has become very obvious that traditional methods are faltering badly and artists need to find innovative ways to sell their music – - will be very interesting to see if there is a cross over effect for album and concert ticket sales from this appearance.

I think the real serious news about GPN is that they soon will be riding in none other than a cheesemobile. That’s right folks, Cabot is sponsoring a bus for them in a couple of weeks. What is better than that?! I hope they stock the fridge. Cheddar for all! They’ll be representing VT, Cheese and music. Wait — is Cabot still VT owned? I’ve lost track. Oh who cares, there’s cheese involved and that’s cool no matter what.

Also, don’t forget that Blues and Lasers are making their west coast debut at the Independent in San Francisco on 11/15. Woot – Woot!

Cabot is still a VT cooperative 100% farmer owned. And the cheese is damn good too.

Tour sponsor = very smart !
Can anyone explain the tour name ? K.C., snowbird, Beuller ?

” Listed below and on our shows page is the Cabot Cheese Presents: “Hello, Cleveland!” fall tour 2008. Don’t forget to also visit our brand new website for updates such as a new 6 song live EP soon to be released on ITUNES. ”

The live EP news ain’t too shabby either :)

Oh crap ! Took all of 7 seconds. Not . a . morning . person !
Feeling stupid and going in search of more caffine now . . . . . . .
Thanks K.C. (and stop laughing)

At the recher show last weekend Grace said “hello Cleveland”, then after a brief chuckle and a pause from the audience she followed it up with, I know this is not Cleveland. At the time I was really not sure if it was a mistake or a joke. Now that I see that it is the ‘hello Cleveland’ tour I see that it was a joke. Too funny.
