I heard Ah Mary, Falling or Flying and Paris and they sounded great! You guys got one heck of a show.

2 Amanda October 5, 2008 at 8:45 am

lets hope it was taped or some video pops up.

3 Chris October 5, 2008 at 10:05 am

Wow! Delta and Toothbrush? When was the last time those bad boys were played? Fantastic!

4 Kired October 5, 2008 at 11:31 am

Must of been helluva show. Sigh.

You know if the audio is out there, cortez will post it as soon as it is in his hands. I would love to hear some from this night, sounds unforgetable.

Great show unlike the Canada show the house was full and alive. Grace received about 15 standing ovations. Her home state Showing her love….oh and she asked for it and we delivered. She promised to kiss everyone. I think she may have missed a couple but not many.

7 Lauren October 5, 2008 at 1:40 pm

JEALOUS.

8 toofarnorth October 5, 2008 at 1:54 pm

Turning green-eyed here too . . now waiting for TH1’s recap ( and
keeping fingers crossed a taper was there

Great show, great energy and it was fun to see Grace and Matt interacting a little in the second set, she from across that Steinway – and he on his mini kit, with Animal on board! The smiles where just so big and they both had such fun with it. Golden was a highlight for me, and Gary does have it on video – it’s an amatuer vid, with a rather lively house in the background, but we’ll be uploading it later today if there’s any interest.

10 guava6982 October 5, 2008 at 3:52 pm

Beautiful! Thanks for shareing your video and with such a qucik turn around time! You guys know that we were all on the edge of our seats waiting for this one. Grace was just beaming at the end of that video. It is great that she gets so much joy out of what she does. You all know it fills us up with that overwhelming joy, glad to see that she is feelin’ it too!

11 toofarnorth October 5, 2008 at 3:59 pm

Thank you so much – Grace sounds fantastic and the lively house seemed to be attentive when it counted – hugs to Gary for a great job.

12 Steph October 6, 2008 at 1:22 am

The intro to Golden really sets the tone for the tune and that’s missing here, as is the lap-steel. Not sure it stands on it’s own w/out those or Jim’s vocals.

13 snowbird October 6, 2008 at 6:40 am

Steph – the quality of the audio might have detracted from Grace’s voice, it was a little mini cam corder that captured that vid. I enjoyed her phrasing, her clear soaring tones right down to the quietest notes. Lap steel would sure be a welcome addition, but it was a solo performance and the twelve string did sound nice IMHO.

14 Steph October 6, 2008 at 8:51 am

Oh, I know it was a solo gig. I just meant I missed hearing the lap steel on this tune. I generally really dig Grace’s/GPNs covers, I’m just not sold on this one (at least yet).

15 owllover October 6, 2008 at 9:03 am

love love loved Golden!! so nice to see and hear it again. Grace is DA BOMB!

16 Todd October 6, 2008 at 11:38 am

Thanks mom!

17 guava6982 October 6, 2008 at 12:27 pm

Steph, you are a tough nut to crack. I thought it was beautiful, I think that J.J. would have said the same.

18 Karen October 6, 2008 at 2:17 pm

I have three versions of “Golden” — studio version from “It Still Moves” album; live version from “Okonos” album; and my favorite, the acoustic version from “Acoustic Citsuoca: Live at the Startime Pavilion” (which must be what Grace is going for). I like Grace’s take very much, and her voice is beautiful here, but nothing could convey the loneliness, joy, love and commitment that JJ’s acoustic version (with full lyrics) does.

19 Vtshome October 6, 2008 at 2:19 pm

Graces beaming was because of the standing O’s she got for every tune. She truly looked hubbled by it.

20 k. cortez October 6, 2008 at 2:48 pm

Karen, you are right, the acoustic version on “Acoustic Citsuoca” is enough to inspire anyone to cover it. I’m planning on covering it myself, you know, when I can competently sing or play guitar.

21 Karen October 6, 2008 at 3:22 pm

kc: Can’t tell, are you being sarcastic? Was my comment out of order?

22 Karen October 6, 2008 at 3:47 pm

Apparently it was. Very sorry everyone, especially Grace. Going off to lick my own wound now.

23 Steph October 6, 2008 at 3:47 pm

Oh no – he’s like me. He’s being a wise-ass. I’m the left cheek and he’s the right cheek on this board. He’s being sincere and self-deprecating. Do you like how I write for you, KC? Anyhow, I’d collaborate w/him on a cover, but somebody recently played my triangle, and now it’s outa’ tune.

Butts aside…I very much liked your comment. It’s nice to contemplate the different versions of Golden. For me, Jim just does this so beautifully and uniquely I’m not sure (in my mind) if any duplication could ever measure up. Know what I’m saying? I could say the same for Potter…there are certain things that she does that if another person did it, I’d say…”hmm…interesting…but it wasn’t as good as Grace.”

24 Tedheadone October 6, 2008 at 3:49 pm

I understand Steph’s original comment completely. For me, the jury is out on “Tonight You’re Gonna Stay with Me” because it didn’t have Dylan’s vocals…….;-)

25 k. cortez October 6, 2008 at 4:44 pm

Yes and no.

I agree that Jim’s version that you mentioned is amazing – didn’t mean for that to sound sarcastic.

I also agree that, as a musician, I suck, also not sarcastic. Sardonic? Wishful? Whatever.

Also agree with Steph, sometimes you never want to hear anyone else do a song which is a signature.

I can’t imagine anyone else doing the a capella version of “NBTW” for instance.

Wait, I agreed with Steph? Now I’m concerned . . .

26 Karen October 6, 2008 at 5:18 pm

Thanks, Steph. Laugh if you want, kc, but I really was hurt. I’m too sensitive for blogging, you know — been looping Grace’s “Paint it Black” since signing off before. And I do want her version of “Golden,” too. It’s a beautiful song for a beautiful voice.

27 Steph October 6, 2008 at 5:32 pm

You shouldn’t be concerned…when the robots take over the planet we can band together and create an alliance. They even make roboflauge underwear to help you blend in.

28 Nancy Nutile-McMenemy October 6, 2008 at 5:34 pm

I’ve posted some photos from the Burke Mtn show at my website:

Enjoy,
Nancy

29 Steph October 6, 2008 at 5:40 pm

Karen – it’s so easy to misinterpret the written word. I’m so snarky that I’m constantly putting myself in a precarious position in this regard. Everyone on this board regularly wants to flog me. That’s ok, though. It’s who I am, and I’m honest in my feelings about GPN whether they be good or bad. To conclude on a positive… They’re heading back out soon, so here’s to a safe, fun, and successful fall tour. May the wind be at your back. May your tolls be infrequent. May your gas be cheap. May your rest-stops be plentiful and clean. May your promoters be merry. May you make some money. And – most importantly, may you rock the whole way through.

30 snowbird October 6, 2008 at 5:42 pm

All right – good verbal intercourse is what blogging is all about right? If we all agreed a hundred percent – it’d be a pretty damn boring world.

I’d hate to be a robot or live on Planet of the Robots.

I went out to see how many versions of Golden I could find on youtube, and was completely blown away by the full Boston Symphony Orchestra version that was shown on Letterman. WOW that was just plain flat out amazing. And far removed from the version that brought on all this conversation. Still like both takes – and understand completely the opinion of “ownership” of a certain song that has rocked your world, or simply impressed.

31 k. cortez October 6, 2008 at 5:50 pm

I’m not laughing at you K. I’m laughing at my own inability to make a point.

And Steph, everyone knows that Monkeys, not Robots will take over the earth. Don’t make me prove it.

32 Vtshome October 6, 2008 at 5:59 pm

Thanks Nanci you really captured how happy Grace was Saturday. I really feel more then any other show I’ve been to she really enjoy playing for us.

33 snowbird October 6, 2008 at 6:04 pm

Really beautifully captured shots Nancy, of a very special night, Thanks for posting them! Agree with you completely Dave – the whole damn house was happy, and I’m not sure if even WE were any happier than Grace that night, crazy at that may seem to some!

34 snowbird October 6, 2008 at 6:06 pm

I’ve seen those winged monkeys you wheel out on occaison mojo!!! And I think we have more than few already running this planet . . .
:(

35 Steph October 6, 2008 at 6:06 pm

EXACTLY, KC! God, why must you argue with me when I’m saying the same thing?! Monkeys will ultimately win out, however not before the robots make their move. This is why you will need your roboflauge underwear to survive. After the dust settles you will be able to align with the monkeys, and live on in peace and harmony. Sheesh!

The monkeys are making subtle advancements in San Francisco. On Friday, I was a parton at their monkey store (where they sell the roboflauge underwear). I also noticed (at the gateway to Chinatown) on Grant Ave there is a park bench adorned with bronzed monkeys. Coincidence…or a sign of what’s to come?

P.S. I’m laughing at you too, KC, b/c I’m not the only one pissing people off today. Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha-Ha!

36 k. cortez October 6, 2008 at 6:17 pm

37 snowbird October 6, 2008 at 6:36 pm

That’s it – politics in A- meri – ca today. Mojo – amaze me again with your arsenal . . .

38 Saygracenow October 6, 2008 at 7:47 pm

Does this guy sleep at nights?

39 Kired October 6, 2008 at 9:13 pm

Yes, he sleeps in a hyperbaric chamber to keep his frail form alive long enough for his essence to be transferred to a robot of his own design. Why yes, it is monkey shaped, how did you know?

40 toofarnorth October 7, 2008 at 12:23 am

Wow , having a deja vu moment from scrolling down the thread . . .
Finally had time to watch the “Toothbrush and My Table” video – thanks again Jan and Gary – nice job. Grace sounded really good and both she and Mat looked like they were having fun. Wish didn’t live at the end of the earth – would love to have been there with all of you.

41 Karen October 7, 2008 at 5:09 pm

I was late for the full M vs R thing and never knew there was a YouTube about it. That’s pretty funny. I couldn’t find BSO version of Golden on YouTube, Snowbird. How did it come up for you?

42 snowbird October 7, 2008 at 7:55 pm

This was it – must have just been pulled. Damn it’s a shame. Maybe there’s another clip of it – it’s really worth the view, as you might guess by the comments. I’ll keep looking for ya!

The other one was much better – but here’s another one

44 snowbird October 7, 2008 at 8:00 pm

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjLFG0i2_AE&feature=related

Weird – the letterman version shows up for me this way – it’s amazing – go watch it!!!

45 Karen October 8, 2008 at 9:27 am

Thanks for searching it out for me, snowbird. After watching this clip, I wish I’d been at MMJ’s three-hour concert someone (Steph?) mentioned recently.

46 Steph October 8, 2008 at 12:31 pm

Hey Karen — yeah this tour is dubbed “An Evening with My Morning Jacket.” No openers…just all MMJ. I went to the show at the Greek Theater in Berkeley. The fact that the Greek is a really cool venue just added to the overall experience. They did a 3-hr, 27 song set. They only had one break for around 5 mins. With 5 members in the band, it seems like they each were alloted a 1 min potty break. Ha-Ha. Now that’s dedication. Pretty intense…

47 Karen October 8, 2008 at 1:40 pm

Steph: I thought it was you, however there is no edit button here if you misspeak. Sounds like a lot of fun. Like the idea of no opening band — the fans had to be thrilled. But I can’t say enough about how wonderful it was to have Blues and Lasers opening for GPN in Troy, and Matt joining them as well.
