grace potter covers “golden”

by k. cortez on September 30, 2008

Grace laid down an excellent cover of My Morning Jacket’s “Golden” on Sunday at the show in Montreal. You can grab the entire show from etree here - Petit Campus, Montreal, QC - Grace is in a talkative mood. Special Bonus Michael McDonald impersonation at the end!

“Golden” (click to download)

Watchin’ a stretch of road, miles of light explode.
Driftin’ off a thing i’d never done before
Watchin’ a crowd roll in. out go the lights it begins.
A feelin’ in my bones i never felt before…
Mmm… people always told me. that bars are dark and lonely
And talk is often cheap and filled with air.
Sure sometimes they thrill me
But nothin’ could ever chill me.
Like the way they make the time just disappear
Feelin’ you are here again. hot on my skin again.
Feelin good a thing i’d never known before
What does it mean to feel?
Millions of dreams come real
A feelin’ in my soul i’d never felt before… mmm…
And you always told me.
No matter how long it holds me if it falls apart
Or makes us millonaires. you’ll be right here forever.
We’ll go thru this thing together
And on heaven’s golden shore we’ll lay our heads

Beautiful job on the song, but her Michael McDowell impersonation was the bomb!

Very nice - perhaps this is a sneak peak of what we’ll hear this saturday at Burke? Thanks for that.

And that MM impersonation - too funny!

Benny Yurco is the current king of MM impersonators. His version of “What A Fool Believes” brought me to tears - and not the emotional kind.

We should get him a crown of something.

Yea I think she needs to work on the MM impersonation and hopefully we won’t hear that Sat. but Golden would be wonderful.

Maybe a crown of thorns for Benny.

Really enjoyed hearing Grace’s pure vocals on this.

Hey Kired - so - do you prefer the creative genius of this MM ? :D

Mojo…this might be one you could post on the live music player! LOVED IT. and I’ll quote from “40 Year Old Virgin”… if you don’t take this Michael McDonald DVD - that you’ve been playing for two years straight - off, I’m going to kill everyone in the store and put a bullet in my brain! I would rather watch “Beautician And The Beast”. I would rather listen to Fran Drescher for eight hours than have to listen to Michael McDonald. Nothin’ against him, but if I hear “Yah Mo B There” one more time, “Yah Mo” burn this place to the ground.

My absolute favorite Jim James song! The lyrics so fit GPN, too. Beautiful job by Grace; wish she’d done it in Troy.

Wow…It is okay to cry…that was beautiful. I could feel Grace’s admiration when she annouced that she was gonna do this. And then, her sort of ‘yay…I got to play golden’ was perfect at the end. I am going to send this to my big bro who is a big MMJ fan. He claims that they are the best band activly touring right now. You all know that I beg to differ…but hopefully he will join the guavas in baltimore next weekend and allow GPN to prove thier spot as #1! Thanks for the treasure K.C.!

I agree with your brother. I just caught their 27 song/3 hr “An Evening with My Morning Jacket” tour/show at the historic Greek Theater in Berkeley. What a night! Probably the best live show I’ve ever seen.

GPN and MMJ (oh, the acronyms!) are my 1/2 favorite live bands out there right now. They both put on absolutely blistering shows, no matter what. Grace’s “Golden” cover is most excellent. Maybe she’ll break it out for Northampton next week. We can only hope.
