the trials of an opening band

by k. cortez on June 21, 2008

From the Albany Times Union

“We’re nice people, we’re from Vermont,” bragged Grace Potter, as she and her band, the Nocturnals, opened the show to a small audience (apparently the beer garden and food court were far more popular). Potter’s soaring, powerful pipes, proficient organ playing and occasional guitar were more than impressive, and it was a crime there weren’t more folks coming in to take their seats to see her.

Perhaps the DMB fans will get wind of what they missed last night and show up in bigger numbers tonight.

Rassanfrackin Stupidsonnofa! Couldn’t those morons hear those kick ass riffs and powerful vocals? How can you hear that and not come a running? What does this say about DMB fans?

It ain’t easy being an opening band. All in good time my friends.

“The driving, frantic “Stop the Bus” and the dreamy “Mastermind” were highlights of a too-short set.”

Seems the writer and I agree on favorites . . .
Unfortunately it seems some followers of a group have tunnel vision and miss a lot of other great music. Sometimes wonder if those types are really there for the music - or the fun . . . . .
Would imagine people from the area would look for reports on last night’s show and will at least see what he’s talking about and that will be all it takes. True talent will always find an audience. :]

I would agree on the favs front.

I do indeed hope that tonight’s crowd is less sonically myopic.

DMB shows are notorious for being riddled w/drunken, uber young, idiots. If you read his forum, last not did not stray from that theme (litter, passed out drunks, fights). I liked Dave’s one album circa ‘94. After that…forget it. I’d rather sit home and punch myself in the face for two hours than go to one of his shows.

I was going to make the same comment Steph. So things still the same for you out in the land of Oaks. You and Joe sit home waiting for the Noc’s to come?

I just wanted to chime in and say that my guava girl Abby was in Saratoga last night, and again tonight. She came from Maryland to see GPN. DMB was just iceing on the cake for her. I am unfourtunatly at home in MD, and wishing that I was there too! Happy B-day Grace!! I spoke with Abby today, and she said that she is stuck on the lawn but she wishes that she could get up to the front row to hoot and holler and show her love for GPN! I myself am counting down the days until I groove with the guava girls & GPN @ All Good & wolf trap in August. If any of you are there, be on the lookout for the guavas, much love to GPN!!

It’s all about who you are there to see. I would’ve hit the exits once GPN left the stage. I’ve loathed DMB for years.

Christ you guys are tough, I think there’s a big difference between what a band does musically and what idiots show up to a concert. And, not all DMB fans are drunken idiots. Just saying.

Of course that is true, Chris. One of my closest friends is a crazy (in a good way) DMB fan, and has been for years. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, DMB shows draw more than their fair share of yahoos. I for one don’t care much for his music either.

But remember, these comments are just opinions…and you know what they say about opinions. Also, opinions are never absolutes.

That said, I stand by my a**hole and my opinion; and would still opt for beating myself about the face over one of his shows.

it could have been me making one of these comments, and then I thought what if I read something about the Nocs OR THEIR FANS…so Chris…we love ya man and we know you got great taste in music and you are there for the music, not to be seen. Dave definately puts on an energetic show and there are many who do appreciate his music.

that said…GET A CLUE THOSE WHO CHOSE TO SIT IN YOUR CAR AND NOT CHECK OUT THE NOCS!!! shame on you!! :)
