grace potter interviews my morning jacket for relix magazine

Grace interviewed the boys from MMJ on an off day in New York City. If you register for a free account you can read the interview online. Here’s a taste of the informative and strangely entertaining interview.

We popped “It Still Moves” into our rented RV stereo while driving south through Oregon into Northern California. With the Pacific Ocean to the right and redwood forests to the left, windows down and a crew of eight people dangerously attempting to make spaghetti in a moving vehicle. It was the closest we ever got to The Partridge Family and My Morning Jacket was our soundtrack.

Grace: He was saying the vibe of your new record was very different - that is had this gospel influence to it. Were you guys ever kind of thinking about going in that direction?
Jim: We did - it’s pure gospel - through and through.

Grace: Yeah, obviously, I mean the backing choir of robots is right off a Staple Singers recording . . .
Patrick: We have the vestments.
Jim: It’s mutated
Grace: Mutated Gospel?
Jim: I mean it’s like rock and roll. Rock and roll started out as Chuck Berry, but now rock and roll is a lot of things.
Grace: Yeah, It’s My Chemical Romance
